Hands-on Training in Photography and Video Editing – Leeds Beckett University

The Leeds Hand-On 2-day training workshop which took place on the 15th and 16th of August 2017 brought together participants from all over the various wards of the Leeds area and that saw them congregate at the heart of the Leeds City Centre – at the Leeds Beckett University Student Union meeting Room 2. This Smart Shoot, workshop in photography and video editing gave participants the necessary skills and expertise required to shoot BETTER than ever before! It was all about Learning the cameras settings and Understanding its functions.

The workshop was delivered by a highly experienced trainer Steve, who has under his belt over 40years experience in photography and video editing. Key to his agenda was ensuring that participants Learned to shoot using all of cameras semi-automatic modes such as aperture and shutter speed priority. Learn the benefits of these modes and when to, and when not to use them. Understand light, how the direction and quality can make a massive difference to your pictures. Learn and understand your cameras “Manual” settings too.

  • All auto modes covered TV, AV, A, S, B, C, Pand Bulb etc.
  • Understand Shooting modes – When to and when not to use them!
  • Creative use of depth of field
  • Understand – Exposure – Shutter Speed – Film Speed (ISO)
  • Light & Light quality
  • Understand – White Balance
  • Understand – Flash / Fill-Flash
  • Learn – To shoot Manually (Just like the Pros!)

At the end of the 2-day workshop, participants where extremely thrilled with the opportunity they had been offered and Thanked SpringAid for organising such an enriching workshop. All of them asserted that they have learnt new and valuable skills which they will take forward and use either in their place of work or further their career path in photography and video editing. They also acknowledged that the workshop has boosted their self-confidence to be able to speak confidently in front of a camera and more so work as a team.

The CEO of SpringAid Mr. Valentine Nzeng thanked and congratulated the participants for taking part and encouraged them to take the skills learned to develop themselves and that of their various communities to bring about positive change. He furthermore, on behalf of the SpringAid management board, gave a MASSIVE Thank You to Award for All (Biglotteryfund#), Leeds Beckett University and the Student Union team for supporting the project from the beginning to the end.

Relieving the Event

Day 1 – What a shot! Taking an image, freezing a moment, reveals how rich reality truly is. Candidates during the Award for all BigLotteryFund# funded program in photography and video editing, displaying valuable skills learned. Key aspects learned – know your camera, ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, amongst others. What an exciting day it was, looking forward to tomorrow.

Day 2. It is said that “If the photographer is interested in the people in front of his/her lens, and if he/she is compassionate, it’s already a lot. The instrument is not the camera but the photographer.”(Eve Arnold). Today the participants showed exactly why photography and video editing is such an exciting field. Well-done to everyone who took part in the 2-day Award for All (BigLottery#) funded workshop at the Leeds Beckett University.
