The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines was an extraordinary scientific undertaking. While the rapid development of the vaccine has had extraordinary achievements in controlling the pandemic, reducing hospitalisations and deaths, many challenges still remain especially amongst people from lower socio-economic and ethnic minority backgrounds who are hesitant to take the vaccines.

Vaccine hesitancy has become increasingly relevant with the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly as combating the pandemic is hinged on high rates of vaccine uptake. Causes of vaccine hesitancy are complex and related to several context-specific factors. Misinformation, disinformation, rumours, and conspiracy theories and social disadvantages including lower levels of education and poor access to accurate information are some of the reasons why people are hesitant to take the vaccines.
